Replica

Typeface Revival

Replica is an ongoing revival based on early 20th-century Italian book typography. The starting point was a face used in Memorie di un Pulcino by Ida Baccini, originally produced by Pierallini & Turchi (Firenze). While it shares characteristics with contemporaries like Belwe-Antiqua and other German Antiquas, the source material revealed distinct proportions and detailing that hadn’t been formally digitized.

The project began as a loose interpretation in 2018, but was fully redrawn in 2020 to address inconsistencies in weight, spacing, and construction. One of the more deliberate shifts was in the serif treatment—moving from softer, rounded terminals to more squared, structural forms to better support the rhythm and durability of the text.

Replica is still in progress, currently consisting of uppercase, lowercase, select ligatures, and a basic punctuation set.
